Lucent Dossier visits The Glass Garage Gallery

I obviously have too much time on my hands this evening, to be able to turn these photos around so quick.
But we really enjoyed our afternoon with Lucent.
The sun was perfect. A warm glow bathing everything. The sun bouncing off the hard wood floor. Beautiful!
And then of course there were you guys!!!!
What a blast!!! People really got involved and loved you guys!!
It was quite a thing to see....

This is a reminder about the May 31, 2008 exhibition at the Glass Garage Gallery, "The Lucent Dossier Project", a very special collaboration with renowned performance art troupe Lucent Dossier Vaudeville Cirque. Lucent Dossier has been internationally acclaimed for their unique blend of avant-garde cirque, vaudeville, and cabaret, embroidered with bits of Fellini, steampunk, and Belle Epoque decadence (www.lucentdossier.com), and were featured in the MTV Music Video of the Year "I Write Sins Not Tragedies".

Several Glass Garage Gallery artists, including Saturno Butto, Jerry Wayne Downs, Steven Kenny, Larissa Morais, Leah Parrent, Luis Sanchez, Margo Selski, and Francisco Valverde, have created work inspired by the themes in Lucent Dossier's performances. Lucent member and artist Rajiv Jain will also showcase inspired works.

Camping and Shuttles at LIB!

The festival map is now posted online. Please take a good look at it, figure out where you think you'd like to camp (If you've been before and know the land) and make plans with your friends to meet up. The entire festival grounds are divided into vegetable patches to make it easier for you and your friends to find each other. Each vegetable patch has a shuttle stop so you know where you and your stuff will be dropped off.

We highly recommend taking some time now and figuring out where you'd like to be camped. It will make the entrance process that much easier for you and your friends.

This site began as a vision of mine somewhere around a year ago, and though it has been met with many challenges in it’s creation – with more to come, I’m sure – here it is, for you.
One of the primary goals I have for it is connecting us, all around the world. The artists, the dreamers, the people who have the power to change the world through beauty – and do. That’s absolutely everybody as far as I’m concerned, but maybe someone just needs a kick in the ass to get them going.
Please push and post this site everywhere you possibly can think of; It is the first and only of it’s kind out there as far as I know, and maybe someone has been looking for it – which is where the seed for this dream was planted. I was that person not too long ago.

cicus scene in new orleans

I’m new to tribe and I’m trying to get the word out about what’s going on now in New Orleans for Circus Arts. The scene revolves around the Whirly Bones Circus Collective. We have a large studio just outside the french quarter and we offer free skill shares in circus arts and aerial classes five days a week! We offer hooping, acro, conditioning, juggling, yoga and clown lab. For fifteen dollars a month (yes, I said fifteen dollars) members can train and teach in the space. Next month the collective is putting on a showcase which includes acro-balance, aerial, juggling and more. Aurora Aerial is also based out of the space and will be holding auditions for an autumn run of shows on September 1st. There is a new aerial yoga class at Swan River Yoga Shala uptown as well. Lucent at the Edison ...

Loved seeing the gang at the Edison ...

But would someone please soften up the security guards? They were so aggro about clearing people from any traffic areas (or almost any area that wasn't against a wall), it really busted up a lot of conversations and vibe.

They were also so strict about dress codes that they really seemed unfriendly, in the worst "Hollywood" way. One of the Lucent performers got denied admission since he was wearing shorts (longer, plaid Bermudas). Someone had to lend him a pair of pants to wear over them to get in. Then they threatened to throw him out again when they noticed he was hearing pants over shorts. They just had NO sense of humor, they did not get our group.

So, it was a pretty place, and Lucent was fun - but the security vibe could really put people off the place, if they don't learn to chill on our group. They seem to be overly afraid of gang bangers or something.

Kinetic Theory Circus Arts, LA's only circus theatre training program has some BIG news!

Room to Spread Our Wings!
We are ecstatic to announce the opening of our new training studio! A perfect spot for circus and physical theatre training, the new studio will feature: a large open area, 20 foot high ceilings, a dance studio and, of course, the supportive, welcoming community of Kinetic Theory!

Our Expanded Schedule
We now have the time and space to offer more of our signature classes such as 'Circus Conditioning', 'Aerial Arts' and 'Contortion', and we've even added a few new classes to our repertoire! A little something for everyone...

New Kids Classes:
Circus Together- a class for toddlers (ages 2-3) and their parent/caregiver to play, move and explore!

Pre-school Circus Stars*- 3-5 yr. olds work coordination, motor and social skills while learning the fundamentals of acrobatics, juggling and object manipulation as well as expressive movement

Youth Circus Arts*- Introduces kids ages 6 and up to the dynamic art or circus. Students learn basic acrobatics, partner acrobatics and hand-balancing as well as juggling and object manipulation, clowning and expressive movement.

Youth Aerial Arts*- 8-15 yr. olds can start their aerial training on static trapeze, rope and tissue. Heavy emphasis is placed on safety and technique as well as fundamentals of performance and choreography.

Youth Contortion*- 8-15 yr. olds can explore the acrobatic art of flexibility. Students will learn proper stretching and breathing techniques, a basic trick repertoire and fundamentals of performance and choreography.

Stage Stars*- Ages 5-7 & 7-12. This class is for those kids who just live for the spotlight! Students learn to use improvisation, classical mime technique, and traditional and experimental theatre methods to create stories and express ideas on stage.

Performance Troupe* ages 8-15, By audition only- Intermediate to advanced students can continue to perfect their circus skills while learning to work as an ensemble and hone their craft as performers.

New Adult Classes (Ages 16+)
Beginning Acrobatics*- Learn the basics of tumbling and hand-balancing. A great workout and foundation class for any circus discipline!

Intensive Stretching- Just a little bit of focus on your flexibility and you'll be amazed at the results! This class emphasizes proper technique, posture and alignment.

Physicalize- Quite possibly the most fun you'll have all week! This class fuses traditional improv games with creative movement, mime and clowning exercises. Lose your inhibitions, feel free and creative, and learn to communicate with your body!

Performance Troupe*, By invitation/audition only- This program is designed for intermediate to advanced students who want to train at a professional level and reach a high-level of artistry as a performer. Troupe members continue to perfect their circus skills while learning to work as an ensemble and hone their craft as performers. Students at this level also gain "real-life" experience by performing in Kinetic Theory shows and at community events.

*Students perform an in class demonstration at the end of every session

We’re finally reaching out to you beauties! What took us so
long!? Well we’ve been creating new shows and concepts,
expanding our hearts and opening up new exciting paradigms.
We did some touring throughout Japan, England, Canada, Ireland, Portugal, Italy, Guatemala, all across the US and back again on our solo tour and with the mighty Do LaB as well as on the epic Panic at the Disco, Dresden Doll, OK GO tour. Dream and Alicia hit the road with
Motley Crue and Aerosmith. We’ve been shot by fashion guru

So here I am, watching the oscars, ordering thai food. All of a sudden this ad comes on... (what for I can't for the life of me remember, a car or something maybe?) But LO AND BEHOLD: It's Shrine himself in all his glory, I scream out, " It's Shrine! Oh MY GAWD! AWESOME!" and the thai restaurant on the other side of the line goes, "Shrimp? You want that with shrimp?"

Lucent Lamour ~ from The Do LaB

First off we want to thank everyone who came out to Lucent Lamour and braved the parking, lines and other bumps in the road and helped make it an amazing event. We do want to apologize for some of those bumps and would like offer an explanation as to what happened and to let you know that we take all of the feedback very seriously as we are determined to better the quality of our events. We really care about your experience and take great care in planning so that you will have an amazing time with us.
It is well know at this point, despite all of our planning, that we found ourselves just seven days before Lucent Lamour, homeless and desperately searching the city and all of our resources for a new venue. We were very fortunate to have found one that would allow us to have multiple music areas as well as a large outdoor area for people to enjoy shows, fresh air and to get away from the music if they chose. But because we found this venue less then a week out we lost the months of planning that went into the original location. Because each venue is so unique it requires great planning not only to be able to offer the custom environments that define what we do, but to also get the logistics dialed in to where they should be so that the experience is what you have come to expect with our events.
The long wait in line was the biggest headache for all of us. We are so sorry you had to go through that! They were way to long and there was confusion as to where to go and what line you should be in and that is our fault, partially due to the last minute change in venue. Those who paid in advance should have been able to get in much faster then they did, but there was a bottleneck where all lines converged on the security i.d. point. There should not only be clearly marked lines, but there should be multiple entrances and do to regulations imposed on us by the venue, the fire marshal and the venues security we were unable to provide that. Our door staff worked very hard and did a great job in dealing with the situation that they were put in.
We also heard complaints about security in the past few days and this is something that people will complain about forever...understandably so...they are not 'us'. Security is a necessary evil in that they are there for our safety and protection but they also slow the process down and tend not to smile as much as we would like them to. They are hired by the venue who is also responsible for the bar and alcohol that is consumed and sold on their property. Serving alcohol, although extremely common, carries great risk for whoever is serving it. This is why EVERYONE is carded and if you do not have an i.d. you are refused entry. As frustrating and time consuming as this process is, it is the law and will continue to be done at our events as they are no longer renegade, underground warehouse parties. We are working on ways of creating the door where this will not be as much of a time sucker.
We have learned from our mistakes in the past when our event Lucent Delirium was shut down by the Los Angeles Fire Department. It was clear to us looking back on that event that we put people in an unsafe situation and many people pointed that out to us as well following the event. We made the decision then to no longer go around the regulations of the city but rather embrace them to ensure your safety and that people wont be left hanging in the middle of an event because it was getting busted. This, at times, is an extremely difficult, expensive and frustrating process but it is one that we will continue to do...for all of our sakes. With this comes a fire inspector who is at the venue for the duration of the event. His responsibility to us and you is to keep everyone safe. It was his decision early in the night to not allow ins and outs to the event. That was a decision that he makes the night of based on how the flow of traffic is and he made that declaration at 9:30 PM which is why you were told that if you leave the event you would have to wait in line to get back in. He also works with security in counting how many people come into the venue as to not have it overcrowded. In this case, he was very generous in this area and based his decision not on the legal number we were allowed but what he thought was a comfortable yet safe number. He also approached me when we were 300 people away from capacity. At that point we had people going through the lengthy line trying to get the people that had purchased tickets online to the front so they would not be stuck outside once max capacity was reached. We have heard it suggested that we decided to get more people in paying with cash opposed to people with pre sale tickets. The honest truth is that this really hurts us that anyone would think this...it is so far from the truth. If greed was our motivation then we would not go through the trouble and expense we do to bring all of the little magical pieces together that define our event. Instead we would open the doors to a club, turn the lights and sound on and take your money with a crooked grin on our faces. This is not who we are and never will be.
On the topic of money, this now brings us to the bar. I know the prices are high but this, most unfortunately, was out of our control. The events where we do have control of the bar the prices never exceed $6 and a portion of that goes to Sonic Muze, a non profit organization that puts art supplies and musical instruments in local needy schools. We were not afforded this luxury at the new location and the control was taken out of our hands. We did negotiate having the prices lowered from what they were originally set at.
We also want to apologize to you and our musical acts for the loss of power and sound in the peek time of event. This is something that we are embarrassed by and should never happen. We are still trying to determine the exact cause of the malfunction with the generator but we can tell you that it was not an issue with the power but rather the motor and fuel line on the generator. According to our understanding, this generator was recently serviced and is a relatively new generator. This issue should not have happened. A lot of people are putting the blame on Bassnectar and how much more power he tends to pull during his sets. This is simply not the case and we take full responsibility for this as we are the ones that rented and operated the generator. We also want to thank those who helped us remedy the problem and who left the party to go get another generator for us to use.
As I said earlier, it is always our goal to constantly better the quality of our productions and to make the next event the best event. We take great pride in our work and put in countless hours to achieve this as we strive for perfection. We will continue to produce these events and will continue to count on your support because you are the ones that add the magic that makes what we do memorable. If there is anything that has not been addressed here that you would like for us to know, please let us know.
Oh, and we put in a call to the city about too many one way streets. It'll never happen again.

Ladies and gentlemen of the art world, we are seeking any and all creative humans who use their skill and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others. That is, we are looking for those whose life is art, and everything they do is DIY. We are searching for those who are creating the Hand-Made Nation. We are calling !ALL! make-believers, dreamers and reality re-arrangers. We are searching hi and low for lowbrow-urban-contemporary-pop-surrealism, pop art, op art, hard-edge, lyrical abstraction, post minimalism, which might be interpreted by some to mean that we are looking only for painters, but that is most definitely not the case. For you see, of course, we need masters of typography, sketchers, illustrators, satirical stencilers, screen printing is way cool, and yes, you too, graffiti fools. Least we forget every culture jammer in the hood. Do you manipulate earth/land/sand/plants/junk into art? Then we have a home for you.

Now, we know some of you may be thinking “What about Dadas’ Dadaists, though?” To this we say, but of course we are calling all inspired by DADA- for where would art be without fluxists, productivism, neoplasticism, pittura, metafisica, arbeitsrat and bauhaus. Well, we are looking for all of “you” from then and now, if any of you still are around. And one may wonder… What about the cubists? We say, “But of course.” Conceptualists? Indeed. Installationists? Please! One might ask if we are seeking anything that might fall under postmodernist modernist who are not distracted by abstractionists and other IST’S. Of course there is always impressionism, post-minimalism, pre-contemporaryism, and expressionism. Are you working in symbolism or surrealism or any of the other -isms that we have not yet mentioned? Well come on out. But wait that’s not all, that could not possibly be all this call for ARTE is all about? Well, Dali you’re right,

This call goes out to all kinetic sculptors, fire sculptors, sound artists bending invisible waves, and video projectionists playing with light. We must invite the minds of the poets and their spoken slam voices, along with improv comedians who mimic the true history of time. Or was that the klown? How can we forget about the klowns! Mimes? Performers “performing” art, puppeteers with their puppets, musicians making sounds. Oh, and least we forget outsider artists wanting to be outside.

In short, we invite all the conceivable movements, modes, and theories of art known to wo/man kind. We say to you, the Artisans of the world who wish to unite because the world needs ART, because the world’s not right. It is time, Your window of opportunity is now. Our space is your blank canvas. Your dreams are our inspiration. You and your art are invited to take part in this epic artistic endeavor.

The world may be going to hell… So let’s make some art.

*Why*: During recent interactions with Los Angeles County and State _Fire
Marshalls <http://www.film.ca.gov/LocationResources/FilmSafety.html>_we have
learned that they are in the process of designing a set of safety standards
and guidelines in an effort to standardize safety requirements within our
industry. These safety guidelines are to be implemented in the first
quarter of 2008.

We have the great fortune that our local county Fire Marshalls have
offered to allow us participate in the design of these standards.
Organizations such as the Safety Advisory for Fire and FX in Entertainment
(SAFFE)and members of the Pyrotechnics community have offered to provide
guidance or advice in the different methods of organizing ourselves and
interfacing with regulatory and enforcement entities such as the Fire
Department.

This *_Wednesday, December 12, 2007_* a Town Hall Meeting has been called to
inform the community and discuss the formation an organization comprised of
members representing the interests of the Los Angeles fire community.

******It is time for us all to come together, as a community - to openly
create our own guidelines that address issues, such as safety, performance
standards, etc. It is of the utmost importance that we collectively decide
this before it is decided for us*****

In Addition, there is a new e-mail discussion list for
fire artists and people who are interested in fire performance in the Los
Angeles area. This list can be joined by following this link:

Call for artist/performers for show on October 20th

I'm creating an interactive performance work for the evening of October 20th in Silverlake in the evening. I'm seeking cultivators of light interested in exploring through performance. It will be a short improvisation with movement, vocals, connections and whatever is called for in the present moment.

The title of the piece is "Echos of recoil and center."
We lay waiting for the next potential moment to arise during this performance called life. Everyone is performer weather they recognize it or not, and as we move and remain still we are connected. Breathe, burn in love and crack your heart open wide.

Please feel free to contact me if you want to take part or want further information about what I'm thinking for the piece. I will be holding no rehearsals for this piece. Just asking whoever commits to be prepared for an evening show which is after 9pm. If you can or are interested please let me know by this Friday October 19th.
